I always say that I love to cook, but sometimes I wonder how true that is I might just like to eat good food that I know I won’t get on a regular basis unless I cook it myself. Especially lately, I just haven’t been in the mood to spend any amount of time in the kitchen. It might be because of the heat, or because I’ve been sick, or because the new dog refuses to let me sleep in the morning so I’ve been tired… but I’ve had no interest in spending any amount of time in the kitchen. Daring Bakers: Dobos Torte

The August 2009 Daring Bakers’ Challenge was hosted by Angela of A Spoonful of Sugar and Lorraine of Not Quite Nigella. they chose the spectacular Dobos Torte based on a recipe from Rick Rodgers’ cookbook Kaffeehaus: Exquisite Desserts from the Classic Caffes of Vienna, Budapest, and Prague.
The torte is a five layer sponge cake filled with chocolate buttercream and topped with wedges of caramel. It’s also one of the most amazing things I have ever baked. We devoured this cake in two days (luckily I only made a mini cake, because I’m sure we would have eaten a full size one just as quickly!) and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since. Last weekend, was Shawn’s 10 year high school reunion. We went out to a restaurant/bar where they were playing the movie ratatouille on a big screen on one wall. I had forgotten what a great movie that is! We saw it when it first came out, but then I had kind of forgotten about it and I never saw it a second time. It definitely kept me entertained while he caught up with everyone from school. Anyway, when Shawn came home from work with a big bag full of tomatoes and basil that he had gotten from work, I knew immediately what I wanted to make. I had a leftover zucchini that I never used last week, and a boatload of plum tomatoes from my garden, so ratatouille was perfect. [....]

Lobster Mac and Cheese

There have been a lot of really good deals on lobster this summer – because of the economy people haven’t been eating as much of it as normal, and since they’ve already been caught, prices are way down. A co-worker of mine just got back from a trip to New Hampshire and he said they were practically giving the stuff away. It’s actually pretty interesting. Even at rock bottom prices though, lobster is still a little on the pricey side for me to feast on. Which is why this mac and cheese is great – its full of lobster goodness, but one medium lobster will feed about four people. You really can’t beat that! [....]

Watermelon-Bacon Sandwiches, Homemade Chips and Dip

I haven’t cooked much this week. I’m still not feeling great and summer finally decided to join us, so out of nowhere it’s become ridiculously hot. I really wanted real food tonight, even though I didn’t feel like cooking, and this meal was perfect. It was easy to make, required very little prep, and was refreshing and not too heavy.

I’ve been dreaming of this sandwich ever since I saw the idea in Newsday a few weeks ago – it’s basically your standard BLT, but with watermelon instead of the tomato. I know I’ve said that I hate watermelon, but those cocktails I made totally changed my mind on that one. I also don’t love raw tomatoes, so I thought this might be a nice alternate. I served the sandwiches with homemade potato chips and blue cheese dip. I also did a little experiment – I had heard of people making chips in the microwave, so I fried some and microwaved some and did a little taste test.
